Report on AGN follow up and prevalence of GAS carrier among the students in Dhunmang community school under Zhemgang Dzongkhag

Background: There was an outbreak of acute glomerulonephritis (AGN) among students of Dhungman community school in December 2010 and the investigation revealed possible cause of glomerulonephritis as Group A Streptococci (GAS).To follow up the old cases of AGN and answer hypothesis, GAS carriage prevalence was ascertained among the students of the school.

Methodology: All the old cases were followed up. Throat swabs were collected from all the 60 students (asymptomatic) including old cases AGN.

Results: None of the old cases of AGN had any residual signs and symptoms of AGN. Out of 60 students enrolled for the study, GAS was isolated from 13 students (21.6%).

Conclusion: The finding reveals the cause of AGN outbreak in the community school to be GAS.
